Can AI assist in transcending human limitations in language, cognition, and neural processing?
“Cognitive Horizons” delves into the exploration of whether artificial intelligence can serve as a catalyst in overcoming human linguistic, cognitive, and neural boundaries. This collaborative project exhibited first time at the OHBM Brain Art Exhibit in June 2024 in Seoul, South Korea, designed by digital artist Can Buyukberber and neuroscientist Valentina Borghesani, builds upon their previous piece, “Stimuli Space: Hyperconnection” showcased in 2022 in Glasgow.

Smart Horizons in the UK with Art & Neuroscience
‘Cognitive Horizons’ is currently on view in the UK at Expo Pavilion in Sunderland, part of the city’s transformation into a leading smart city. The piece is displayed on a 20x5 meter semi-transparent LED screen, one of the largest of its kind in the UK. The public arts programme, curated by Debra Stewardson, explores the theme of ‘home’ and future living throughout 2025, offering a glimpse into the future of art and urban environments within the broader vision of a smart city.

Cognitive Horizons at Expo Pavilion
Located in Keel Square, Expo Pavilion serves as a focal point for Expo Sunderland, inviting visitors to thoughtfully explore their connections with culture, environment, and the concept of 'home'. Central to this mission, and closely linked to 'Cognitive Horizons', is the Pavilion’s innovative semi-transparent LED screen, seamlessly integrating physical spaces with digital experiences, symbolizing a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary lifestyles. This dynamic digital canvas continuously showcases evolving artworks, including those inspired by neuroscience and generative AI technologies, celebrating Sunderland's local heritage alongside acclaimed international artistic contributions. The interplay of local identity and global creativity illustrates how art and cultural globalization can enrich everyday life, boost community well-being, and inspire sustainable living practices and environmental awareness.

Immersive 360 Version
An immersive 360-degree adaptation of Cognitive Horizons, originally developed for Art Basel Miami 2024. 10-minute immersive edition extends the piece into an enveloping audiovisual experience, specially designed to be showcased in immersive environments, offering audiences a deeper exploration into the synergy between art, neuroscience and artificial intelligence.

The Artist × The Neuroscientist
Cognitive Horizons marks our third collaboration with neuroscientist Valentina Borghesani since 2018. Further details about our previous collaborative projects, including Stimuli Space, a data-generated mural visualizing brainwave activity related to language processing, can be explored on our Stimuli Space page.
